15,000won/person for non-members, 1won~ however much you'd like to contribute for members. 15 people max, first-come first-serve basis
Overview: Processing is not just a great tool for visualization, but its also a great tool for prototyping and sketching interactive ideas, concepts and simulations. It allows anyone a chance to unlock the world of programming easily and quickly allows you to start building complex projects of any type, whether they be visualizations, GUI/UX prototypes, hardware interfaces or networked mobile apps. This workshop is intended to help beginners to take those first steps into the world of computer programming. We will cover all the basics, and leave you on comfortable footing to continue to make projects and explore more on your own. We will be exploring topics such as the introduction to the processing environment, program flow, the basics of programming (variables, if statements, loops, etc). Program organization and logic, learning processing specific functions and how to read the processing docs. We will also touch on how to use 3rd party libraries to access the more advanced features of processing. The content of the class will be scaled to match the people that attend, so if everyone knows the basics we will advance more rapidly to more difficult topics.
Noah Shibley is a Seoul based media artist, comprehensive designer, programmer and hardware developer. He is a professor at Tongmyong University and also the cofounder of NoMi Design where he invents and designs all manner of tools, platforms and devices.

Wearable Summer Nights - 6.11.2012 (Mon)
Showcased in Boehringer-Ingelheim Outdoor Garden Dinner Party, Shilla Jeju Hotel
"Animal vaccine" was the overarching theme of the works, which were commissioned by a German vaccine company for an outdoor garden event in Jeju-do. Tilt sensors were used to light up the massive reed wings and a dreadlock hair piece with LEDs that were worn to dance with and parade around, adding flair to the event. A volume meter was prototyped and then individual circuits were soldered and assembled to be worked into various wearable accessories, including a sinister cape with shoulder pads, an industrial helmet and a cup-fro. Because the event took place at night, the sound sensitive, illuminating accents made the pieces alluring and inspiring.
The works were mostly made of recycled materials such as plastic cups, leftover paperboards and fabric, and disposable syringes used for acrylic solvent glues.
Probiotics Workshop - 6.10.2012 (Sun)
Update: Many apologies but the venue for the tomorrows probiotic workshop has been changed from Hacker Space Seoul located next to Euljiro 3-ga subway station to Susubori Academy which is located by Seodaemun station (line 5). I will be waiting till 16:30 or so at Hacker Space Seoul for people who are not aware of the change of the place and after that we will move to Susubori together, arriving between 17:15-17:30. Manager of Susubory academy Hyojin Jo will be welcoming the early arrivals :-) directions are below. If you are unsure how to make it, you can come to HSS, directions are also listed.
Once more sorry for this last minute change I hope it doesn’t cause you too many problems. The good thing about it is that we will have fully equipped brewing laboratory to our disposition and you will also know when is the next event taking place. And by the way there will be blenders available so if you bring some fruits I have some kefir a some “stronger staff” we can make some cocktails :-) - Frantisek
After such a big interest at Maker Faire in probiotics and fermentations in general we have decided to do another probiotic workshop and actually to take it even farther.
We would like to invite you to two events within the “realm of fermentations”. First one is a workshop on probiotics which will take place in Hacker Space Seoul this weekend on Sunday 10th of June. I will be hosting this event giving a short presentation on probiotic organisms and foods to get a bit of background first. After that we will have some tasters of course and hands on workshop on how to prepare kefir based ferments. We we will also make a probiotic non alcoholic ginger beer. Everybody is welcome to join, the event is donations based with profit going towards experimental fermentations, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please spread the word so more people know about it and do not forget to bring some containers so you can take some cultures home. Of course bringing some ferments for others to experience your artwork is a great idea! Links for additional info, directions etc. are below.
The second event will be held on Sunday 17th of June starting at 16:00 with our host being Susubori Academy - Facebook. This event will done as a gathering with fermentations being the “main topic on the agenda”. It will bring together both experienced brewers and fermenters and people who would like to learn about the fermentations. More details will be shared within a week or so. If you know people experienced in fermentations please let them know about this event and get us in touch so there are more people on the board. Again everybody is welcome, donations will be appreciated covering the costs and used for experimental fermentations, no one turned away for lack of funds. Again bring whatever you would like to share with others, it would be mostly appreciated!
Maker Faire Seoul - 6.1-2.2012
We'll be occupying a booth to represent HSS in Korea's first Maker Faire. Some of our artwork will be on exhibition and also the mini-theremin kit we put together on sale for hobbyists and kids seven or above who wish to learn about basic circuitry and unique electrical components. The mini-theremin uses photo receptors and some audio amplifiers to create an interactive and auditory experience. The photo receptors change their output frequency based on the amount of incident light. These electrical changes allow the user to easily and delicately adjust the sound pitch with the motion of their hand over these photoreceptors so that it can be played like a musical instrument.

BLOP - 9.1.2011
Curated by Howard Jiho Kim, Jihyun Song, Joona Kim
Participating Artists: Kiho Huh, Chihyung Shim, Minon Kim, Jung Hee, Jinseo Yoon, Hyewon Yoon, Joona Kim, Jihyun Song, Howard Jiho Kim
‘BLOP’ is an interactive installation piece with strings hanging high and low near the ceiling of the venue, holding together a meshwork of balloons. Each of the silver balloons holds a LED module, which will light up when vibration from outside is detected. The ‘BLOP’ bobs over the heads of the partiers, blinking lights of different colors and bringing out the child in everyone in its bounce, character and mystic appearance.
The ‘BLOP’ was installed within a venue called Platoon Kunsthalle, a place located in the middle of Seoul’s city life, which often hosts fashionable arts and media gatherings. This installation was designed to help social networking for the DALSMA (Digital Architecture and Large Scale Media Art Conference) pre-party. More than two hundred strings tied up to couple dozens of balloons run parallel and crisscross each other, covering the ceiling space between the second and first floor. These bubbles of light bounce along with the people filling in the space and mingle together in the lively network. At first the ‘BLOP’ stays in its calculated position as a mesh forming a smooth surface where some strings and balloons suspend lower within the reach of the guests and some hanging higher towards the ceiling. The floating installation tries to playfully counterbalance the existing gravity of the space built by heavy metal container boxes.
As the party heats up, conversations mount and people start reaching the balloons in excitement to find out that the LED modules in the balloons light up to their touch. The strings tangle with the movement in the house along with the mingling community. Some people even climb to the second floor to pull at the strings. Many bounce up and down to tap on the higher balloons. With time, as the place becomes more and more vibrant, the installation starts to lose its original shape.
The installation tries to tap into the spontaneous interactions of a social party. It was expected that the people at the gathering would be playing with the balloons but some went further to pull down on the strings or even to pop the balloons to take out the LED lights to play with. All of these interactions were encouraged and the unexpected pattern that emerged throughout the party was its highlight.

PLASMACK! - 6.3.2011 (Fri)
SEOUL · on June 3rd (last friday), we threw a huge bash called PLASMACK! it was a pre-party for DALSMA, an annual international conference about Digital Architecture and Large Scale Media Art. (D.A.L.S.M.A., there you go) The party, which happened a day before the actual conference, was not just a typical eve, but rather a celebration packed with a lot excitement. it was the outgrowth of three dynamic groups united, DALSMA, HackerSpace Seoul and Platoon Kunsthalle. HackerSpace Seoul is currently working in studio B, one of the artist labs at Platoon Kunsthalle. Colorful media and hacking elements on top of this party were totally out of the ordinary.
The interactive social games developed by HackerSpace Seoul and DALSMA were blended into the atmosphere and the participants very smoothly without giving any pressure of a huge concept, media. let me introduce some of the most enjoyable social games, which adorned the party.
Dan Mikesell (HackerSpace Seoul), physical computing and kinetic expert, is wearing a helmet with a headphone attachment inside and an ipad around his neck. the participant, dan in this case, received some missions from the "player" holding a joystick on the second floor, through the wifi transceiver within the ipad, connected with the headphone. dan and Andrea Bianchi purple t shirts), one of the DALSMA's representatives, co-invented this game. andrea was an organizer of PLASMACK and has taken charge of the artist programs participating for DALSMA.
The players gave missions, like "run," "dance," "go back," and "say hello to the guy next you!" maybe it was a little bit embarrassing for the participant while the players were having some fun, but it was meant to be! the key point of this game was making the participant to be brave enough to get closer immediately to the person he/she likes, instead of just circling around.
'Twinkling alluring eye' was produced by Hacker Space Seoul. it was the objet in the testing phase for the 'kiss and wink game,' a collaboration by jihyun and minyoung (HackerSpace Seoul). the main hall was brightened up with this "third" eye. according to Jihyun, in buddhism, the third eye is the mind's eye in other words and it is believed to give an insight into other's minds. in fact, this philosophical(?) equipment helped many participant to get the conversation started with all the cool people out there and get to know each other.
Daham Park, studying at KAIST, played the cello and performed modern dance. the spoken words transformed into her dance were truly overwhelming and the energy that she was giving off was simply unbelievable. at the same time, the splendid videos, produced by vj will craig and aniframe art director noah shibley, were screened and they were in beautiful harmony with daham's performance. they brought the party to the next level, even more colorful.
Silver balloons with LED inside, emitted beautiful lights whenever people shook them. as time went by, the party grew more exciting and people were shacking more balloons. although they all got tangled in the end, architectural value was still remained just like the beginning. actually it was very impressive to see all the different lights, which reminded us of the interaction and the process of building a network with others from various fields.
According to HackerSpace Seoul, they do not aim at destruction, but disassembling and creating something new out of the components. also, DALSMA stated that they want to inspire people and increase their awareness of the variety of ways we can begin re-thinking modern cities and WE LOVE THEM. there is a thread of connections between all three of us, including PLATOON KUNSTHALLE. so, please look forward to us and of course, big shout outs go to all the participants as well as the organizers and staffs from all three promising groups, HACKER SPACE SEOUL, DALSMA and PLATOON.
